Ben Hammersley Commits to Chiefs
Exeter Chiefs winger Ben Hammersley has committed his future to the club, signing a contract extension.
The 20-year-old has been finding his feet more firmly in the first team squad this season having made his debut at the beginning of the season against Bristol Bears in the Premiership Cup.
So far, Hammersley has put 17 appearances next to his name as he looks to cement his place in a young, exciting and competitive Chiefs backs division.
“If someone had said to me that I would debut in the Premiership and the Champions Cup this year, then I would have bitten their hand off,” the young winger said. “So, to be looking back now, I’m very thankful to everyone that has made it possible.
“I can’t wait to continue learning and growing with this group and hopefully contribute to more success at Sandy Park going forward.”
Hammersley’s introduction to rugby came at age six for his local club, Hertford RFC. A family move to Cornwall introduced him to Newquay Hornets before the Cornwall DPP programme brought him into the fold.
The hard-hitting winger continued his rugby development at Truro College before moving to Exeter in 2021 to start studies for a Sports Science degree.
With the University of Exeter, Hammersley was named a Super BUCS title winner in 2022.
Director of Rugby Rob Baxter believes there is real promise in Hammersley’s game and he looks forward to the youngster flourishing in Chiefs colours.
“We’re delighted to have re-signed Ben. He is part of a young and exciting group that have broken through this season. Similarly to Tommy Wyatt, having gotten into the team he was playing exceptionally well – very strong on the ball, very strong defensively.
“Probably, in a lot of ways, one of the highlights for us has been watching a young academy player break through in the way he has. He’s another guy who has been in that university pathway, and he has come through and accelerated with his development really well.
“I’m glad he’s staying as he is maturing and improving all the time. I think it’s a really important statement for us that we’re going to be pushing through with these young players.”
Hammersley joins a list of teammates who have committed their futures to Chiefs in recent weeks.
