Finance Director to step down

Exeter Rugby Club chairman and chief executive, Tony Rowe OBE, has today paid tribute to the ‘outstanding efforts’ of Alan Quantick, the club’s finance director, who will step down from his role at the end of the current season.

After almost 14 years of helping oversee the financial running of the Rugby Club and Sandy Park itself, Alan says the time is right for him and his family to continue his support of the Chiefs away from the board room.

Alan’s involvement, though, has been instrumental – particularly in the past few years – where the club is still battling its way back from the significant losses inflicted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I simply cannot understate the time, effort and knowledge Alan Quantick has brought to the board throughout his time with the club,” said Mr Rowe. “Alan and I have been friends for many years and that relationship has only blossomed over his time with the club.

“Having initially started out with us in the Championship, Alan has since played an integral role in our rise not only as a force within English rugby, but also that of European rugby as well. Much of that outstanding work is often done behind the scenes here at the club or at his home, updating our internal processes and turning us into a nationwide, multi-million pound organisation.

“Like for all of us, the past few years have been incredibly challenging with regards the pandemic, but Alan’s knowledge and business acumen has meant that we were able to negotiate through that period of time in a much better position than many of our competitors.

“On behalf of everyone associated with Exeter Rugby Club, can I take this opportunity to thank Alan for everything he has done during his time with us – and we look forward to seeing him here at matches and other events in the future, as well as enjoying his retirement.”

Alan joined the Chiefs back in 2008 and was a Chartered Accountant in the city for over 30 years. And it was because of his passion both for the club and the local community that he also took on a role as one of the trustees of the Exeter Chiefs Foundation.

“From the moment I came to the club, I’ve loved the involvement and the journey we have all been on,” said Alan. “I’ve worked with some amazing staff, both on and off the field, who have all gone above and beyond in their desire to make the club such as a success. I would, however, like to pay particular thanks to Nicky Teague and the amazing accounts team here at Sandy Park.

“Personally, I’m very proud of the fact that pre pandemic we were one of the only profitable clubs in the Premiership. That is down to the leadership of Tony Rowe and the rest of the board who have given me unwavering support over the years.

“Although sad to be standing down, I’ve no doubt the club will continue to go from strength to strength and I shall continue to be supportive outside of the boardroom as a season ticket holder and member.

“Finally, I want to thank my wife Chris, together with my family, all of whom have been so supportive in and around my role with the club. Now, though, is the right time to step back and give them all a bit more time – I may even have a bit more time to play golf!”
