Exeter Chiefs forward Jonny Gray has joined up with the Scotland squad in Spain as they prepare for Saturday’s Guinness Six Nations opener against England at Twickenham on Saturday.

Gray, 28, sat out last week’s training camp in Edinburgh, instead staying at Sandy Park to monitor what the Scottish Rugby Union described as “an ongoing medical issue”.

Edinburgh’s Jamie Hodgson was called up as temporary cover for the lock. However, Gray started and scored for the Chiefs in Saturday’s 24-17 Gallagher Premiership victory over Gloucester.

Alongside club-mate Stuart Hogg, the duo both reported into camp with Scotland following that game, and will now hope to be part of Gregor Townsend’s plans for this weekend’s much-anticipated tussle.

Gray will compete with Edinburgh pair Grant Gilchrist and Sam Skinner, Leicester's Cameron Henderson and his brother Richie of Glasgow Warriors for a place in the second row for the Calcutta Cup match.
