Harris Forced to Retire on Medical Grounds
Exeter Chiefs hooker Iestyn Harris has been forced to retire from rugby on medical grounds.
The Welshman has been battling injury and despite an intensive rehab period with the view of returning to full fitness, having sought medical advice, he has been forced to retire from the sport.
The 25-year-old joined Chiefs in April 2022 from United Rugby Championship side, Cardiff Rugby and he has since made three Chiefs appearances.
Brought up in the Welsh valleys, Harris first got involved in his local club Wattstown RFC with their minis team. Recognised for his talent and developing skills, the front rower was brought into the Cardiff Rugby fold at just 16.
While part of the squad at the Arms Park, he was recognised by his country with age-grade honours for Wales U20s.
Harris says, while he is disappointed that his playing career has come to an end, he has enjoyed rugby and the friendships it has allowed him to make.
“I’d like to thank my family and friends for being so supportive, not just throughout this process but throughout my whole rugby career.
“A huge thank you as well to all the players and coaches I’ve worked with, at Cardiff and Exeter. I’ve made friendships at both clubs that will last me a lifetime.
“Rugby has been my life since I was a kid, so it’ll be strange not to be in the team environment anymore but I’m also excited to see what comes next as I start a new adventure away from the sport.”
The club would like to thank Iestyn for his time as an Exeter Chief and wish him well for everything that lies ahead.
