Honiton Girl's Rugby Success

Wednesday 14th July saw the Exeter Chiefs Community team head down to Honiton Rugby Club for the first Project Rugby taster session for the u13s and u15s girls.  Over the past 12 weeks the team have been working hard over the road in Honiton Community College developing girl's rugby with the pupils, and this sparked the enthusiasm to start girl's rugby at the neighbouring rugby club.

Our first ever evening saw over 40 girls attend a two hour session, which also included our very own Laura Sheehan, Ireland International and Exeter Chief! It was fantastic to see so many new faces at Honiton and we were delighted that the session was such a success, laying the foundations for girls rugby to become a big part of Honiton's future. 

Girls rugby is rapidly growing across the County and with our new womens team here at Exeter Chiefs we are seeing more participation than ever before. It is vitally important that girls have equal opportunity to train and play rugby outside of school and we hope that this is the start of many local clubs working with schools to make such things happen. 

Laura said, “it's grand to see so many girls here and giving the sport a go” and we hope that the success of the event will encourage Honiton rugby club to make this a full time girls section. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with both Honiton Community College and Honiton rugby club and hopefully this is the first of many.
