Project Rugby Participants Impress

Three students from Ilfracombe Academy have impressed the Exeter Chiefs Community team after taking up coaching roles at their local club, following participation in Project Rugby at school.

The students enjoyed their introduction to Rugby through Project Rugby so much that they went to join their local club, Ilfracombe Sharks. Unfortunately, the club did not have the numbers for a team for their age group but instead of walking away, the students wanted to give back what they had received at school and have now volunteered to coach at the club.

“I’m so impressed with these students’ willingness to get involved in the game,” Richard Bright, Assistant Community Development Manager said.

“They have really gone above and beyond. It’s a shame that they weren’t able to join the local club, but for them to think outside the box about how they can still be involved is brilliant. They will be great role models to the younger children that they are coaching every Sunday morning,” he continued.

One of the students who is now coaching at Ilfracombe Sharks, Dolton, said: “I started coaching at the Ilfracombe Sharks because I enjoy teaching my favourite sport and developing the players. Having one of my best friends coach with me is just a bonus!”

Another of the students, Corey, added: “It was a shame that there weren’t enough people in our age group to form a team, but it’s great to still be able to join in and help the other coaches and age groups.”

Delivered by the Exeter Chiefs Community team, Project Rugby is run by Premiership Rugby in partnership with England Rugby and Gallagher and aims to increase participation in rugby from traditionally underrepresented groups including people from low socio-economic backgrounds, disabled people and black, Asian and other ethnic minorities. This year, the Community team are aiming to reach over 1,300 children through the programme.
