Interest in Women's Rugby has never been higher and here in the Westcountry it's no exception with the game continuing to grow at all levels.

With the Exeter Chiefs recently announcing exciting plans to form a professional women's team next season, Exeter University's Women's team winning the BUCS Championship, plus a thriving club scene within the region, it's little wonder that the sport continue to captivate so many people.

At Exeter College, the outlook is equally encouraging with their women's academy - now in it's fourth year - going from strength to strength.

There are currently over 40 players at Under-19 level regularly training together and competing to represent the college on a weekly basis. The girls who are selected to attend do so whilst studying full-time Further Education at Exeter College across a variety of different pathways, from vocational programmes to A-Level courses.

The rugby academy is built into their timetable to allow it to take place during the college day and involves skills, game-play, tactics, strength and conditioning, SAQ and analysis sessions.

Since it's inception, the women’s academy has enjoyed many successes, including winning the Girls Open 7's Competition at Rosslyn Park. They have also had six former academy members represent Tyrrell's Premier 15's teams, either during their time at college or shortly after starting adult rugby.

Furthermore, Exeter College have also been recognised on an international scale with current and former players being selected for England at U18s and U20s level, as well as for the Senior National Academy.

Now, the college are looking to offer an exciting pathway prospect for Year 11 girls in the Devon and Cornwall area, who are interested in developing their rugby at an open trial at 7pm on Tuesday, December 17 at Exeter College Sports Hub.

The evening will offer a formal presentation to parents and players, as well as the opportunity for coaches to assess the girl's physical and rugby abilities.
